Bi Any Other Name: Bisexual People Speak Out

Bi Any Other Name: Bisexual People Speak Out is the anthology I co-edited with Lani Ka’ahumanu, which was first published in 1991. A groundbreaking book that gives voice to the personal stories of a diverse group of bisexual people, it is considered a catalyst for the bisexual rights movement. It has been cited in hundreds of other works and was named one of Lambda Book Report’s Top 100 Queer Books of the 20th Century. It has been reprinted three times and is still in demand, appearing on numerous LGBT reading lists and queer studies curriculum guides. An edition in Chinese was published in 2009. You will find copies with one of two covers: the original publication in the pink shade and the later publication in the ochre shade. Check back for more information about a new, updated edition that will be available in an e-book and in print. Click here to visit my book’s Facebook page.

Sexuality, Religion and the Sacred:
Bisexual, Pansexual and Polysexual Perspectives

Sexuality, Religion and the Sacred: Bisexual, Pansexual and Polysexual Perspectives is the anthology I co-edited with H. Sharif Williams, which was published in 2011. The publisher’s synopsis describes this book as a “thoughtful collection of bisexual, polysexual and pansexual scholarship on religion and spirituality. It examines how religious and spiritual traditions address sexuality, whilst also exploring the ways in which bisexually-, polysexually-, and pansexually-active people embrace religious and spiritual practice. The book offers a contemporary yet scholarly treatment of these topics through a collection of critical essays by academics of theology, humanities and social science, as well as sexology professionals and clergy from various faith and spiritual traditions. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Bisexuality.” You may also purchase it directly from the publisher at http://www.routledge.com. Currently available in hardback only, the price may be too high for most people. However, you may request that your library purchases a copy. Routledge will consider releasing it in paperback at an affordable price with only 50 more sales. Click here to visit my book’s Facebook page.

Erotic Rites: A Cultural Analysis of Contemporary United States Sacred Sexuality Traditions and Trends

Erotic Rites: A Cultural Analysis of Contemporary United States Sacred Sexuality Traditions and Trends is my doctoral dissertation, which was published in 2001. From the abstract: “Progressive trends in the U.S. over the past fifty years—the development of a body of knowledge about sexuality, an increased interest in holistic healing modes, and the proliferation of sexual liberation movements and more sex-positive spiritual paths—have all helped create welcoming public space for the emergence of contemporary groups devoted to erotic spiritualities. These groups, sometimes referred to as sex magic groups or tantric sex, are most commonly known as sacred sex groups. They teach a range of meditation and sensate touch exercises centering on erotic rituals that focus on seeing one’s partner(s) and oneself as embodiments of the divine.” You may purchase a copy of my dissertation at http://www.proquest.com/en-US/. • I Lost A Partner …

For Nancy Logsdon Mandelkorn, R.I.P., April 5, 2015 I lost a partner. She told people she “fell in love” with me before she knew me. She meant she fell in love with my work in the world, how I gave her courage to be. We took care of each other, that’s what mattered, still does. […]

  • On World AIDS Day 2014 . . . I remember

I read something about it in 1981.  A newspaper report about a mysterious rare cancer found in 41 gay men. I’d returned to DC in August 1980 from the International Black Hills Survival Gathering outside Rapid City, SD, where we—the environmental activists, American Indian Movement leaders, ranchers, and concerned scientists, academics and clergy—were trying to […]
